Jim Crow Laws. 1877. After the Civil War, Reconstruction protected the rights of newly freed blacks. When Reconstruction ended in 1877, the federal government stopped protecting the rights of blacks. Some Southern states created Jim Crow laws to oppress blacks. 1896.

  2. 1877 • After the Civil War, Reconstruction protected the rights of newly freed blacks. • When Reconstruction ended in 1877, the federal government stopped protecting the rights of blacks. • Some Southern states created Jim Crow laws to oppress blacks.

  3. 1896 • The US Supreme Court tried a case called Plessy v. Ferguson. • The court upheld the Jim Crow laws. • This means the Supreme Court did not find the laws to be unconstitutional • Jim Crow laws were allowed to continue
