  5. Lucky number 4 • Four-leaf clover (克洛弗) • Clovers have 3 leaves • If you see one with 4, it’s good luck!

  6. Black cats • If a black cat walks in front of you, it’s bad luck! • People used to think black cats were witches (女巫)

  7. Cross your fingers • If you cross your fingers when you make a wish (愿望), it will come true • “I wish for a new car for my birthday, please!” • Your fingers look like a cross (十字架)

  8. Broken mirror • If you break a mirror, it’s bad luck for 7 years! • The mirror sees your soul (灵魂)

  9. Number 13 • Number 13 is bad luck • Friday the 13th is the bad luck day. The scariest day of the year! • This year is September 13, 2013

  10. Knock on wood • You knock (敲) on wood when you don’t want something bad to happen • Crosses (十字架) are wood • “I hope we don’t get sick today. Knock on wood.” • “This test is going to be easy. Knock on wood.”

  11. Don’t open the umbrella! • Don’t open umbrellas inside – it’s bad luck! • I don’t know why! Maybe because it’s dangerous?

  12. Superstitions • Most superstitions in the west are because of Christianity (基督教) • People don’t want to go to hell (bad luck) • They want to go to heaven (good luck) • Making God happy is good luck!

  13. Your Turn • Think of your own superstition and why • Miss Lisa’s superstitions: • You shouldn’t use a pen on an exam. It’s bad luck because if you write something wrong, you can’t change it. • You should give your teacher candy before class. It’s good luck because the teacher will be happy and be nice to you.
