Assessment of Biological Quality Elements for Water Framework Directive

This module focuses on the assessment of biological quality elements required for the Water Framework Directive (WFD) implementation. It discusses the measurement of deviation from reference conditions, ecological quality ratios, and the calculation of ecological quality ratio (EQR).

  2. An assessment of the biological quality elements must be taken into account when assigning waterbodies to any of the ecological status or ecological potential classes. The status of each of the biological elements for natural waterbodies is determined by measuring the extent of the deviation, if any, from the reference condition of a particular waterbody. Reference conditions are the conditions of the biological elements in the absence of pollution or disturbance. Biological

  3. The Ecological quality ratios (EQR) scale for the monitoring system for each surface water category is divided into the five classes (High, Good, Moderate, Poor and Bad) by assigning a numerical value to each of the boundaries between the classes. The values for the boundary between the classes of high and good status, and between good and moderate status are being established through the EU supported intercalibration exercise. Biological- EQR

  4. Calculation of Ecological Quality Ratio (EQR)

  5. The biological quality elements grouping comprises fourspecific elements as follows: • Phytoplankton • Macrophytes • Invertebrates • fish Calculating an Ecological Quality Ratio (EQR)

  6. For each of these elements the directive prescribes a number of parameters

  7. Ecological status one out all out

  8. If the monitoring resultsfor both biological quality elements and the general and specific physico-chemical quality elements in a water body meet the conditions required for good ecological status/potential, the overall ecological status /potential of the water body will be good. However, if one or more of the general physico-chemical quality elements or specific pollutants do not meet the conditions required for good ecological status/potential but the biological quality elements do, the overall ecological status/potential will be moderate. Good Moderate

  9. Biological as well as supporting hydromorphological and physico-chemical quality elements are to be used by Member States in the assessment of ecological status/potential. The relative roles of these elements are illustrated in Figures 1 and 2. Status assessment
