What Do We Have Already? • 3 sets of encyclopedias: • Two sets of 1991 and 2002 World Book Encyclopedias • One set of 1988 Young Children's Encyclopedias • 12 different dictionaries: • Two 1972 Merriam & Scott and Foresman intermediate dictionaries • Four 1979 Scott, Foresman beginning dictionaries • One 1998 Webster's Large Print dictionary • One 2001 Webster's New World College dictionary • One 4th grader stated, "Dictionaries are boring because they're plain, there's nothing exciting, and they smell kind of funny.” • 7 different almanacs: • One 1981 Macmillan Illustrated Almanac of Geography • One 1992/1993 Ohio Almanac • One 2000 Blackbirch Kid's Almanac of Geography • One 2003, one 2004, one 2005 Almanac for Kids • One 2005 Time Almanac • 2 different thesauruses: • One 1968 Webster's New Dictionary of Synonyms • One 1977 "In Other Words" A Beginning Thesaurus • 4 different altases: • One 1987 Doubleday Children's Atlas • One 1998 Picture Atlas • One 2000 Hammond New Century World Atlas • One 2001 Nystrom Atlases

  3. What Do We Need? • Updated digital encyclopedia • Class sets for each school of: • Dictionaries • Atlases • Almanacs • Thesauri

  4. Why Do We Need These Resources? • In order to model and teach effective research, we need current resources that will be accessible to all students. • Students will see that research is valuable if they see the resources are contemporary and designed for them. • When teaching a classroom of students, it’s imperative that each student has a resources to use as practice (rather than simply watching an adult model).

  5. How Will This Benefit Our Students? • Research benefits students in the following way: • Helps develop interest in new topics • Helps them learn to organize ideas—their own as well as other people’s • Helps them develop necessary skills to be independent and motivated learners as they progress through their school careers. • AASL Standards for the 21st century learner addressed: • Using appropriate computer search techniques to locate information. • Independently scanning and selecting resources at the appropriate level • Summarizing and paraphrasing • Taking notes effectively.

  7. How Will We Evaluate Effectiveness? • Formative Assessments throughout the research units • Exit Slips • Student Pair Shares • Teacher and LMS observations • Summative Research Projects • Third and Fourth grade research products will be presented and displayed in the district
