  1. WORKSHOP ON PROMOTION AND ADVOCACY OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND MANAGEMENT OF GROUNDWATER RESOURCES 15 JUNE 2010 MINI AUDITORIUM, NAHRIM

  2. Promoting Sustainable Development and Management of Groundwater – Professional’s perspective IrMohmadAsariDaud WaterbezSdnBhd AquadeluxeSdnBhd PerundingNusajasaSdnBhd Majlis Profesional Air & TeknologiHijau (PROATEK) Groundwater handpump in Tonle Sap, Cambodia, 12 May 2010

  3. Promoting Sustainable Development and Management of Groundwater – Professional’s perspective FAQ’s How sustainable is groundwater? Is it allowed to be extracted? How much is it allowed? Do we need license? Can it goes dry? Where is it used? Is it of potable quality? Who owned the groundwater?

  4. Promoting Sustainable Development and Management of Groundwater – Professional’s perspective • For promotion and advocacy: • Viability • Availability

  5. Promoting Sustainable Development and Management of Groundwater – Professional’s perspective • VIABILITY • Cost – is it cheaper to develop, easier to abstract? • Treatability – content: impurities, minerals, taste, turbidity, colour, pH • Marketability – how to reach consumer, willingness to pay, alternative, bottled/piped • Environmentally friendly – protect the environment, land subsidence, saline intrusion?

  6. Promoting Sustainable Development and Management of Groundwater – Professional’s perspective • AVAILABILITY • Quality – dependent of location, depth, environment • Quantity – how much do we have, safe yield • Consistency – will it deteriorate with time, abstraction rate • Continuity – recharge, artificial recharge, storm water recharge, “conjunctive”

  7. Promoting Sustainable Development and Management of Groundwater – Professional’s perspective • For Designer, similar for any other source; • How much can be abstracted? • What is the dry spell yield? • What is the safe yield? • Pumping test adequate? • Quality of water at source? • Location, where best to abstract? • Improvement and innovation required? FAQs How sustainable is groundwater? Is it allowed to be extracted? How much is it allowed? Do we need license? Can it goes dry? Where is it used? Is it of potable quality? Who owned the groundwater? QUALITY & QUANTITY SATISFIED, will the designer proceed?

  8. Promoting Sustainable Development and Management of Groundwater – Professional’s perspective • ADVOCACY AND PROMOTION OF GROUNDWATER • IWRM (2% (potable), 10% all use: percentage of the safe yield) • Driver and Enabler – Ministry, SPAN, water operators; rules, regulations and acts • Protection – “easier” than surface • Technology, innovation and new concepts • Conjunctive use – wait till crisis?

  9. Promoting Sustainable Development and Management of Groundwater – Professional’s perspective • CHALLENGES • Risks reported: Impact of GW – subsidence, salinity, environment • Any source and development works has its merit and demerits – reservoir /dam, rivers source (maximum utilisation); nuclear plant • Recharge and discharge adequacy

  10. Promoting Sustainable Development and Management of Groundwater – Professional’s perspective • OPERATIONABILITY • Design yield and operating rule • Reservoirs (underground/above) – volume • Operating rule – abstraction rate (Q) • Sludge management – much less compared to surface water • Europe/China visit – Wessex, Wein, Jining

  11. Promoting Sustainable Development and Management of Groundwater – Professional’s perspective Simple treatment of GW source Dipolog City, Mindanao, Philippines

  12. Promoting Sustainable Development and Management of Groundwater – Professional’s perspective Coloured water from surface water (river) Bengkalis, Sumatera, Indonesia

  13. Promoting Sustainable Development and Management of Groundwater – Professional’s perspective Clean rivers, yet GW is preferred Bath, Wessex, England

  14. Promoting Sustainable Development and Management of Groundwater – Professional’s perspective Linz, Austria Crystal clear GW – the brickwork of walls of the well can be seen

  15. Promoting Sustainable Development and Management of Groundwater – Professional’s perspective • Jining, China: • Simple treatment process – disinfection only Sodium hypochlorite with HCl Chlorine gas, Cl2

  16. Promoting Sustainable Development and Management of Groundwater – Professional’s perspective • Labuan, Malaysia • Typical problem of iron content in GW • Appropriate treatment for specific problem

  17. Promoting Sustainable Development and Management of Groundwater – Professional’s perspective traditional “practice” of alternative source DEVELOPMENT DURING CRISIS the way forward CONJUNCTIVE USE SUSTAINABLE WATER SOURCE DATA & INFORMATION SHARING SOLUTION TO SLUDGE/RESUDUAL ISSUE
