  3. What is Movie Maker? • Windows Movie Maker is a fun and easy to use video editing program that allows you to make home movies, automated photo albums and business presentations. It is included as part of the Windows XP operating system.

  4. What is Movie Maker? • It is used to create just that, movies. Movie Maker is from Microsoft • In a Mac computer it is called iMovie. • The steps in both are similar but with certain differences we will not point out here • We will only work with Movie Maker

  5. Steps in Movie maker • Before we can start making a movie, let’s look at the parts of the Windows Movie Maker window. • 1.Movie Task View • Links to the various tasks to create your movie.

  6. Steps continued… 2.Collections View • A list of all imported components for your movie - photos, videos or sounds. 3.The Preview Screen

  7. Timeline and Storyboard 4. The Timeline or Storyboard • All parts of your movie, whether photos, videos or sounds are dragged to this area.

  8. Steps to Import Pictures • Click on the Capture Video link to open the list of options. In this example we will be using still pictures and music to create our movie. • Click on Import pictures and locate the folder containing your pictures. • Select the picture files you wish to import.

  9. Tips • Tip - To select several picture files which are listed consecutively, click the first filename in the list, and then while holding the Shift key, click on the last filename in the list. This will select all the files at once to import.

  10. Tips continued… • Similarly, to select several files that are not in consecutive order, hold the Ctrl key rather than the Shift key and then click on the different filenames you wish to import.

  12. Drag Pictures to Storyboard Drag Pictures to Storyboard

  13. Storyboard • In Windows Movie Maker or other movie making software, the Storyboard is an editing area located at the bottom of the window. It is a panel of pictures or other movie clips, laid out in the sequence that they will be shown in the movie. In general, storyboards are a series of photos or drawings that outline the sequence of scenes and major changes in the production. • Examples: The storyboard for Mary's movie contained individual photos as well as movie clips that she intended to use in her movie.

  14. Tips on storyboard • Note - Clicking the Show Storyboard link returns you to the Storyboard view. This link will then read Show Timeline. Clicking on the link Show Timeline returns this area to the Timeline view. You will use both views during the creation of your movie.

  15. How to drag pictures • Drag your pictures to the Storyboard area of the window. The Storyboard is where you will build your movie. • Notice that after you drag your picture to the Storyboard, it still remains in the Collections view. You can use the same object many times in your movie if you wish.

  16. Pictures into Windows Movie Maker Import Pictures into Windows Movie Maker

  17. Tips on importing pictures • Tip - To select several picture files which are listed consecutively, click the first filename in the list, and then while holding the Shift key, click on the last filename in the list. This will select all the files at once to import. • Similarly, to select several files that are not in consecutive order, hold the Ctrl key rather than the Shift key and then click on the different filenames you wish to import.

  18. How to import music • Steps • Under the Capture Video link, choose Import audio or music. • Locate the folder containing your audio file. • Select the audio file you wish to import. • Once the audio file is imported, you will notice the different type of icon in the Collections window.

  19. Where can audio be added? Audio Clips Can Only Be Added in the Timeline Movie Maker caution box

  20. Add an Audio Clip to the Timeline • Drag the audio icon to the Storyboard. • Note the message box indicating that audio clips can only be added in the Timeline view. Audio/Music Timeline Audio files have their own location in the Timeline to keep them separate from pictures or video clips. This makes it easier to manipulate either type of file.

  21. Align the Audio with a Picture • Drag the audio file to the left to align with the start point of the first picture. This will start the music when the first picture appears.

  22. Timeline View of the Audio Clip

  23. Timeline View of the Audio Clip • The Timeline indicates how much time each item takes up over the course of the whole movie. Notice that this audio file takes up a much bigger space on the Timeline than the pictures. Scroll across the Timeline window to see the end of the audio clip. • In this example, the music ends at approximately 4:23 minutes, which is much longer than we need.

  24. Save Your Windows Movie Maker Project Save Your Windows Movie Maker Project

  25. To save work • Before you proceed any further, you should save your project. It is a good idea to do this frequently throughout the movie making process. • From the main menu, choose File > Save Project. • Windows Movie Maker saves the project in the file format .MSWMM which allows for editing at a later time. When your movie is complete, you have additional options for saving the file, so that it may be played in a webpage or emailed, for example. These other options do not allow editing, so it is important to save your working file in the Movie Maker project format.

  26. Transitions and Video Effects • Click on tasks • Click on transitions for movement from one picture to another. • Click on video effects that will change a particular picture. • Drag the transitions or effects to in between the picture

  27. Title Slides • Type information accordingly and choose done when finished. • Note you can change the title animation and font and color.

  28. To make the movie file when finished • Click finish movie • Save to my computer • Enter a name (the title) for your movie • Put in “my documents” (easier for computer) • Move the movie file later to your network folder • Delete project and pic folder from my documents
