  2. John’s Argument about this World • John argues that to lose intelligence and feelings was a steep price… • Mond counters that they also lost a more “pure” religion • The Bible is banned in the World State because it is too old.

  3. The Simple Truth • Even if the Bible was allowed in the World State, the citizens would not understand the complexities of God and faith. They are too-simple minded and they have no role model. How could they understand?

  4. Cardinal Newman • Said that.. • Man is God’s property despite any personal belief • Man turns to God in his darkest of days • Mond uses this idea that man “needs something/anything to believe”. Instead of the Bible/Christianity – they believe in him and in Henry Ford.

  5. Huxley’s Commentary (The Satire) • Huxley similarly believes the same thing – we all need something to believe in. • It doesn’t always have to be religion. • It can be yourself (Human Potential Movement), your family/friends, etc.

  6. Pre-Moderns Vs. Moderns Vs. World State Regardless of the world, we have the freedom to believe in what we choose and what we choose to live or fight for. The World State citizens do not. They have become “tame” animals that don’t know what it means to fight.

  7. Mond’s Clarification • The lack of religion and God create stability • There is no war or fighting or drama • There are no hurt feelings • There is no feeling guilt or lack of worth

  8. John Fights Back • The feelings of hurt and suffering make people everyday heroes. Without suffering or fighting, we are people with no reason to live.

  9. Soma… • Is “Christianity without tears” to Mond • By taking the drug and following the rules of the World State, you are good and virtuous • No reading? No thinking. • No thinking? No existence.

  10. The End of Chapter 17 • The philosophies of John and what John stands for: • Everything that makes you happy and unhappy, the things that make you healthy and unhealthy, the things that give you comfortable and make you uncomfortable. John wants the right to be unhappy.
