Listen Actively To listen actively, Washington ESL students should: Adult learners listen actively for a variety of purposes, integrating their knowledge, skills, and strategies in the following process: Determine the purpose for listening Focus attention and choose listening strategies appropriate to the purpose Monitor comprehension, adjusting listening strategies as needed Integrate new information with prior knowledge to address the listening purpose • Attend to oral information. • Clarify purpose for listening and use listening strategies appropriate to that purpose • Monitor comprehension, adjusting strategies to overcome barriers to comprehension • Integrate information from listening with prior knowledge to address the listening purpose

Speak So Others Can Understand To speak so others can understand, Washington ESL students should: Adult learners speak so others can understand for a variety of purposes, integrating their knowledge, skills, and strategies in the following process: Determine the purpose for speaking Organize information to effectively serve the purpose, context, and listener Convey information, paying attention to the conventions of oral English communication, including grammar, word choice, pronunciation, register, pace, and gesture in order to minimize barriers to listener’s comprehension Use strategies to monitor whether or not the speaking purpose has been met • Determine the purpose for communicating • Organize and relay information to effectively serve the purpose, context, and listener • Pay attention to conventions of oral English communication, including grammar, word choice, register, pace, and gesture in order to minimize barriers to listener’s comprehension • Use multiple strategies to monitor the effectiveness of the communication
