This guide offers clear instructions on how to name ionic and covalent compounds effectively. For ionic compounds, start with the positive ion followed by the negative ion, changing the ending from "-ine" to "-ide." For covalent compounds, write the leftmost element first, using Greek prefixes for multiple atoms. Discover key examples like sodium chloride (NaCl) and dinitrogen tetraoxide (N2O4), along with Greek prefixes to aid in naming. Perfect for students and anyone interested in chemistry!

Naming Compounds Ionic Compounds Covalent Compounds
Ionic Compounds • 1.Write the positive ion first (usually from the left side of table, group 1 or 2) and the negative ion second (usually from the right side of table, group 7 or 17) • 2. simply write the name of the first element in the compound • 3. for the second element, exchange the ending inefor ide and write it • Example –Sodium Chloride
Covalent Compounds • 1. write the element that is furthest left on the table first and the one furthest right on the table second. • 2. simply write the name of the first element in the compound if there is only one of them, but use the Greek prefixes if there is more than one of them • 3. for the second element exchange the ending ine for ide and write it with the correct prefix.
Greek Prefixes • Mono 1 • Di 2 • Tri 3 • Tetra 4 • Penta 5 • Hexa 6 • Hepta 7 • Octa 8 • Nona 9 • Deca 10
Examples of covalent names • carbon dioxide CO2 • dinitrogentetraoxide N2O4
