  1. Sperm and Eggs

  2. The Sperm • 200-500 million released each ejaculation • Only a few hundred reach the egg • Only ONE fertilizes the egg • Produced daily from puberty until death • Carry 23 chromosomes of genetic material • Can live up to 4 days inside the female

  3. More about Sperm… • Can only live a short time outside the body • Take 12-24 hours to reach the fallopian tube • Stored for approximately 6 weeks - are reabsorbed and eliminated if not released • Look like tiny little tadpoles and use their tails to move • Travel 1/3 inch an hour after ejaculation

  4. Sperm Productionhttp://health.howstuffworks.com/adam-200126.htm • Sperm are produced, stored, and delivered, by the male reproductive system

  5. The EGGS (aka Ova) • Carry 23 chromosomes of genetic material • Woman is born with all the eggs she will ever have- stored since before birth • Born with approximately 400,000 eggs, but only about 400 mature and are released • Released halfway between periods • Usually released one at a time if 2 possible twins

  6. More about the eggs… • Size of a grain of sand • Usually live for 2-3 days if not fertilized • Are moved along by the fimbre and cilia in the fallopian tube • Stop being released at menopause (around age 52 in America) • 200,000 eggs in each ovary

  7. Egg Productionhttp://health.howstuffworks.com/adam-200017.htm • Egg production is an essential part of the female reproductive system. This animation illustrates how hormones, the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes and vagina work together during egg production to ready an egg for possible fertilization.
