  2. Facts about Google • The name Google is a play on the word googol. (1 googol = 1.0 × 10100) • Google's use of the term reflects their mission to organize the world's immense amount of information and make it universally accessible and useful. • From time to time Google logo is modified for a special occasion. These special logos are called doodles. • Google is a search engine, not a directory.

Search Engine vs Directory • Directories are human-compiled and have a small number of pages in their databases (usually in the low millions) • Examples: MSN, Yahoo • Search engines are machine-compiled and have a HUGE number of pages in their databases (usually in the hundreds of millions or even the billions) • Ex: Google, Yahoo Search

  4. How To Effectively Use a Search Engine • Be Specific • Use “quotations” to search for phrases • “Little Red Ridding Hood” • Use the + sign to require • technology + blogging • Use the – sign to exclude • Technology - .com • Use or • Hawaii or Malibu

  5. Combine as many symbols as possible. • “George Washington” – Martha + presidency • Search for filetype: • technology filetype:ppt • The order of words matters. Capitalization usually does not. • If you search for more than one keyword at a time, Google will automatically search for pages that contain ALL of your keywords. • Google will accept up to 32 keywords.
