  1. CGSIC July 2006 Peter Ramm peter.ramm@dse.vic.gov.au Victorian Update

  2. Outline • Introduction • Current Status • Current Issues • Future

  3. Introduction

  4. Victoria Area < 3% of Australia Population 24.9 % of Australia)

  5. 2004 CGSIC Report • 21 Sep 2004 Long Beach • Issues • Policy Framework • Location Based Services Project • Implications for Victoria • Realisation of the datum • Reg 13

  6. Current Status

  7. Policy Framework • Continues to be important • Provides the policy context for positioning infrastructure • Within Policy, positioning is becoming more important • Facilitates other activities • Exposes quality issue in other spatial DB • Coordination of infrastructure

  8. LBS • Planned to have about 0.5 m accuracy real time solution over Vic • Delivered Dec 2004

  9. Implications For Vic • For all practical purposes GPSnet is the realisation of the geodetic datum in Vic • Now have Reg 13 Certificates on 18 Base Stations

  10. Victorian GPS Base Station Network

  11. Comparison

  12. Current Issues

  13. Current Issues • Networks solutions not quite there • Inter Station Distance too small • Poor understanding of how they work • Low sat numbers a problem at times • Driving changes in spatial data • Increased spatial accuracy in mapping • Coordination • Multiple software systems on the one network • Hardware Costs down, but operators still have high costs • CRC SI • NCRIS

  14. The Future

  15. The Future • State wide • Real time • 2-3 cm Horiz Accuracy • 3-5 cm Vertical Accuracy

  16. Relevant papers (Vic Priorities) • Denham et al Contemporary Position and Navigation Needs of Precision Agriculture and Victoria’s GPSnet CORS Network • Gordini et al Testing and Evaluation of a GPS VCORS Network for Real Time Centimetric Positioning – The Victorian GPSnet • Hale et al validating a Model For CORS Network Management • Yousufi et al Temporal variations of the Victoria GPSnet Base Stations • Zhang et al Sparse or Dense: Challenges of Australian Network RTK • Timeframes a problem
