  2. Date of Birth/ Early Years • Born in Portugal • Born in 1480 • Studied navigation early • Tried to get sponsors • King of Portuguese didn’t sponsor • 1518 gained support from Spanish King • Believed Sailing West would get to Spice Islands

Reasons Explored/Country Area/ Explored • Set Sail Sept. 1519 • With 270 men and 5 ships • Sailed across Atlantic Ocean to Coast of Brazil • Weather was cold • Stayed for 5 months • Weather was violent in straights • After straights weather in ocean was peaceful • Continued voyage 4 months • Water/Food bad • Magellan was killed in battle 1521 • Crew member took over and continued voyage
