Session objectives • Understand how to modify assessments for English language learners • Understand the challenges of assessing learning disabilities in English language learners • Suggest ways to utilize the expertise and experience of ELL teachers throughout the school • Understand how to transition ELL students from sheltered immersion classes into mainstream education classes

  4. Video presentation • Intro to ASCD Tape of model schools • Reflect on Handout 19’s questions • Watch video tape

  5. discussion • Break into groups of 3 or 4 • Briefly discuss Handout 19 • Share out observations • Consider Federal/State requirements • Test all students grades 3-8 every year • Tests will determine school “success” • Schools must assess ELL English proficiency • States must set & assess annual objectives • Failing schools will suffer penalties

Responses to Handout 19 • 1 Verbal interaction; WAPT, K-WAPT; ACCESS; observing group work, DIBELS, classroom assignments/assessments that allow for different abilities - assess English • 2 open-ended writing assignments, make language relevant and current on a daily basis, Can-Do descriptors • 3 Teach the standards that give the highest test pay-off, give students every allowable accommodation

Further responses • 4 Focus on the most important standards, practice accommodations, increased academic time, focus on positive purpose, identify critical test vocabulary for high stakes testing prep. • 5 Assessing SpEd- use both native language & Eng. • 6 Expose students to regular content & rigor.
