  1. Hollyanne Pronko, Student Body President First year experience

  2. What is this FYE that everyone keeps talking about? What do you think??

  3. According to SJU… “FYE’s are designed to assist the student in making the transition from a sheltered youth in a structured home setting to the university where they will be called upon to make their own decisions, maneuver the institutional processes and experience the consequence of their own actions.    Students need a clear picture of what is expected of them for academic success, as responsible adults, and as men and women for others.  They need to know how to access the people and resources to accomplish their goals and be successful in college. ” - First Year Experience Task Force: Final Report, May ‘07

  4. Say Whatttt?? • In a nutshell, FYE programs are designed to help first year students adjust to college life. • SJU’s FYE program focuses on the following: • Academic Courses • Orientation • Residential Programs • Mission-related programs • Advising • Counseling • Information technology

  5. What does that have to do with us? • Administration asked for our input • Freshman DESERVE the best FYE they can have • A lot of the FYE indirectly falls under us already. • It does????!!!!

  6. Here’s how.. • Advising • “provide for first year advising that.. • Is consistent with best practices • Begins during summer orientation • Involves faculty as primary contacts with students • Is linked with first year seminars • Has well-defined goals • Has a clear, practical assessment plan linked to the goals” • CAS Advising Center Initiative • First year seminar addition to the Curriculum

  7. Co-Curricular • “coordinate co-curricular programs to provide a more intentional FYE with emphasis on improved communication” • Diversity & Service • Link the Offices of Mission, Residence Life and Student Leadership in activities • Pursue Service Learning model • Bridging the Gap campaign • VP for Mission • Res Life Committee • Service Learning in the Business school Initiative

  8. Ongoing Programs: Career Services • Is the Career Development Center the best it can be? • Career Services to Campus Initiative • Ongoing Programs: Office of Mission • “ coordinating with other offices to pool efforts, provide a cohesive FYE and avoid scheduling conflicts” • VP for Mission • Communication • New ideas • Larger audience

  9. Ongoing Programs: Freshman Seminars • Currently, Freshman Seminars are offered to 550 students. • There were 29 sections in fall of 2006 • Information Technology • Technology has been inconsistent and unreliable • Internet access in dorms • Wireless v not? • My.Sju • Email crash • Unresponsive Are these issues that the USS should look further into?

  10. Weaknesses of SJU’s FYE that WE should pay attention to.. • Freshman seminars not available to HSB students • Adjunct teaching is not uniform • Limited exposure to fulltime faculty • Lack of Advising Center in CAS • Communication error between departments (Student Life, Res Life, Campus Ministry, etc.) • Career Services • Information Technology problems

  11. Student Committee • There is a “steering committee” made up of Administration (including Dr. Perry) • There is a student committee forming to provide necessary student input • Freshman Focus Groups • Involved & Uninvolved students • Each different residence hall • Sophomore, Junior & Senior students reflecting on their experience • Survey of Current Freshman

  12. Notes.. • I wanted to give you an idea of the “bigger picture” • The FYE is something the Administration is taking seriously • Some of our goals can be supported by the Administration’s push to improve the FYE • I encourage you to look into your personal initiatives and see if there is a way to tweak it to also benefit the FYE. • This is just something to keep in mind…

  13. Questions? • http://www.sju.edu/biology/ksweb/fye/home.html • NOT fully updated!!
