Clarity • Problem: Garbled speech is caused by poor enunciation or improper pausing. • Solution: Mark script to remind you when to pause. Do your vocal exercises.
Expression • Problem: Beginners are usually too subtle in their expression. • Solution: Overemphasize to exaggerate as much as possible.
Pitch • Problem: Beginners lack variety in pitch (monotone). • Solution: Vocal exercises. Mark your script to remind you to add variety.
Other Elements that Affect a Vocal Performance • Posture: Stand straight with feet apart. Hold script just above waist level. • Eye contact: Look at the audience at least half of the time. • Lack of preparation: Rehearse 15 to 20 times. Really! • Poise: Do not let audience know if you mess up (i.e. giggling, rolling eyes, apologizing, etc.)
