Purpose of the Toolkit • To help teachers understand the value of integrating literacy best practices and instructional strategies into content area instruction. • To provide teachers with useful resources to help them integrate literacy best practices and instructional strategies into content area instruction. • To provide resources to states for professional development in literacy at the state level. Content Expert Literacy Q & A Literacy Q & A: • Responses to common questions content teachers have about integrating literacy instruction into their daily practice • Explanations for why literacy instruction within the content areas is so important • Suggestions for how to embed literacy instructional practices into content lessons • Sample Question: How do I fit literacy instruction and the use of literacy strategies into my daily instruction when I do not have enough time as it is to cover my content? Professional Development Module • A professional development presentation that is designed to help “roll out” the Adolescent Literacy Toolkit. • Can be used by SEAs, LEAs, or others to introduce and explain how to use the toolkit to teachers. • The module includes: • PowerPoint presentation • Facilitator’s notes • Teacher reflection guide • Teacher action planning template CCSSO SSR Follow Up Meeting Sept. 10, 2007
