Using statistical data gathered over the past 100 years, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts that a natural disaster of sizeable proportion will occur in the south central section of the United States, which includes Texas, between 2040 and 2050.
In order to be prepared for this expected disaster, NOAA has established a task force to study the relationships between each natural disaster and the possible impact upon this region.
In order to increase the awareness of natural disasters and their related issues, NOAA has invited selected groups of students from the defined region to join their study. As fourth and fifth grade students in the McKinney Independent School District ALPHA Program, you have been invited to participate in this study.
As future decision makers of 2040- 2050, NOAA has requested that students become amateur “experts” on a specific natural disaster.
The goal in this project is for students to gather knowledge and become “experts” on a specific type of natural disaster.
Using historical data and current events, “experts” will predict possible problems, determine viable solutions, including safety during and following a disaster, and share that knowledge with local citizenry.
