  1. Weed warriors Lets get those weeds! Help public places, like parks and trails, be beautiful once again! Created by: Megan LaFever A weed warrior from Hazen High School

  2. Introduction • Newcastle Weed Warriors are volunteers working with the City of Newcastle to reduce the negative impact of invasive and noxious weeds in Newcastle’s parks, trails, and open spaces, and thus improving the aesthetic and recreational quality of our public places. • Newcastle Weed Warrior projects provide volunteers the opportunity to learn about invasive and noxious weed plants, which are environmental menaces and wreak havoc to our environment and native species plants. • Newcastle Weed Warrior volunteers become part of the solution in solving the invasive weed problem.

  3. Intro. Continued • Weed Warrior volunteers are “mighty warriors” that battle against invasive noxious weeds in our community. Battle plans include a strategy for removal of the weeds and are often followed by a restoration plan that stabilizes the environment and returns it to a native habitat. • The Weed Warrior program fosters an increased awareness of and participation in local weed issues with hands on experiences in public areas in our community. • Today’s youth will be tomorrow’s natural resource managers and environmental stewards. • A steward is someone who takes care of another person’s affairs or assets. Environmental stewards take care of the environment, like public parks, trails, and natural landscapes that belong to our community.

  4. Intro. Continued • Newcastle Weed Warriors challenges all ages to develop a sense of connection to and responsibility for the natural landscape, public parks and trails, thus empowering members in our community to become environmental stewards. • Weed Warrior projects reflect the willingness of the local citizens to be involved and take part in their community as environmental stewards. • All ages are encouraged to volunteer in the battle against invasive weeds and become Might Weed Warriors!

  5. Projects • Removing Invasive Weeds, like Ivy and blackberry • Restoring Native Habitats by planting indigenous species plants

  6. Conclusion • Become a Weed Warrior • Have tons of fun working with us • Earn volunteer or community service hours • Help remove weeds and clean up the environment • Bring your friends and have a good time!
