BIOCHEMIST & BIOPHYSICIST Closely related to medical scientists, biochemists and biophysicists study living organisms at the molecular level — one focusing on their chemical composition, especially DNA and how it can be manipulated to treat disease and genetic disorders; the other using math and physics to understand how mechanical and electrical energy affect an organism. The three fields are so interrelated that labels are Cell, Molecular and Developmental Biology and Biophysics — is typical of the wave of interdisciplinary study in the field.
Job Description • Biochemists are scientists who study the chemistry of living things. Their work includes studying the complex chemical combinations and reactions involved in metabolism, reproduction, growth, and heredity. • biologists. They study bacteria, viruses, and other organisms to better understand the chemical basis of life. They also determine the effects of chemicals on medical problems such as cancer, aging, or obesity. • Biochemists in nutrition analyze food products to measure their vitamins, proteins, carbohydrates, and minerals. They research the effects of freezing or cooking and compute the caloric value of foods.
Salary & Potential Pay • $88,550 mean • Salary:$42,926-$69,041 • Bonus:$75.00-$5,278 • Commission:$39,372-$65,501
Training & Courses • A degree in biochemistry or a related science such as chemistry is the minimum requirement for any work in this field. This is sufficient for a position as a technical assistant in industry or in academic settings. A Ph.D. (or equivalent) is generally required to pursue or direct independent research. To advance further in commercial environments, one may need to acquire skills in management.
WHY IT SUITS YOU • If you like biology and chemistry classes in addition to the required calculus, physics, and other core classes. Basic classes in biology including (but not limited to) microbiology, molecular biology, molecular genetics, cellbiology, and genomics are focused on. All types of chemistry are required with emphasis on biochemistry and organic chemistry. • Very patient with researches, and is very creative.
