  2. Aimer • Is a verb • It belongs in the family of verbs known as –er. • You already know some other –er verbs. Can you think of any? • Parler • Nager • Étudier • Fermer • Préférer • Écouter • Débarrasser

  3. les verbes -er • These verbs are in the same family because they are conjugated the same way. • Conjugate is an important word here. What does it mean? • To conjugate means to change the verb so that it agrees with the subject. • English verbs are also conjugated, but not so elaborately. • Can you conjugate an English verb?

  4. les verbes -er • Today you are learning how to conjugate all –er verbs. This opens a world of linguistic opportunity. Now you can make sentences.

  5. les verbes -er Here it goes… First, drop the –er at the end of the infinitive. This is called the stem. For example, aimer becomes aim, jouer becomes jou. Then, write the endings. Notice that the endings change. The stem stays the same.

  6. les verbes -er Let’s try. Can you say “she likes to listen to music.” Elle écouter de la musique. aime

  12. les verbes -er • See, that was easy! • To recap, conjugating verbs is essential. In 6th grade you learned expressions and nouns. As 7th graders you have entered into much more sophisticated territory. By conjugating verbs you can make sentences! • Just remember the endings!

  13. les verbes -er Try these: Thomas aime le football américain. Julie n’aime pas les frites. Nous parlonsfrançais. Je nage. Tuparles au téléphone beaucoup. • Thomas likes football. • Julie doesn’t like fries. • We speak French! • I swim. • You (informal) talk on the • phone a lot.
