  2. guardrail: a system designed to keep vehicles from straying into dangerous or off-limit areas

  3. where we need guardrails: • bridges (when we are in a place where there is little margin for error) • medians (when we are close to people going in the opposite direction) • curves (when we encounter unexpected changes in conditions)

  4. [guardrails]

  5. guardrail: a personal standard of behavior that becomes a matter of conscience

  6. Ephesians 5:15-17 See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.

  7. three kinds of standards: • bible standards(the direct commands of scripture) • church standards(places where our spiritual leadership applies biblical principles to contemporary issues) • personal standards(our own guardrails prompted by the holy spirit)

  9. Proverbs 13:20 He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.

  10. [guardrails]

  11. the bible calls an out-of-control desire a lust

  12. 1 Peter 2:11 Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul.

  13. Romans 13:14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

  14. 1 Timothy 6:6-10 But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

  15. greed is the assumption that it’s all for my consumption (“if anything comes to me, then it’s for me”)

  16. Matthew 6:24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. (whatever I trust for security is my GOD)

  17. God’s way • give it (eternity) • save it (future) • repay it (past) • enjoy it (present) • man’s way • enjoy it (present) • repay it (past) • save it (future) • give it (eternity)

  18. Matthew 6:32-33 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. (not a matter of money, but PRIORITY)

  19. Matthew 6:21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. (my heart always follows my TREASURE)

  20. Romans 6:12-13 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. (sex is not just a PHYSICAL act)

  21. Proverbs 11:3 The integrity of the upright shall guide them: but the perverseness of transgressors shall destroy them. (a double standard will DESTROY us)

  22. 1 Corinthians 6:18-20 Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body. What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s. (flee temptation, don’t FLIRT with it!)

  23. our desires are never totally satisfied our desires grow when they are exercised

  24. temptation starts where you build a guardrail

  25. Proverbs 27:12 A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself; but the simple pass on, and are punished.

  26. guardrails for married people: • don’t travel alone with members of the opposite sex • don’t eat alone with members of the opposite sex • don’t confide in members of the opposite sex • when you feel your heart drifting toward someone, tell someone about it • make sure your spouse approves of your guardrails!

  28. Daniel 1:8 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself. Daniel 1:9 Now God had brought Daniel into favour and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs.

  29. God used Daniel’s guardrails not just to protect him, but to direct him … Daniel’s guardrails actually defined his future!
