  1. Gertrude Stein “America is my country, and Paris is my home town.”

An Introduction/Early years. • Gertrude Stein was born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, on February 3, 1874. • Born into a wealthy family—The Steins moved to Vienna, Austria when she was just three years old. • The Stein’s European adventure lasted four years and they returned to America in 1878,eventually settling in Oakland, California. • In Baltimore, Stein met the Cone’s—Claribel and Etta Cone who held Saturday evening salons. Upon this meeting, they would all discuss their appreciation for art and literature.

Early years and Education. • Stein attended Radcliffe College, then an annex of Harvard University. • The duration of her study lasted from 1893-1897 and was a student of psychologist William James. • The study under James would be hugely significant as we see the representation of ‘’stream of consciousness’’, a method used in her writing. • James then encouraged Stein to enroll at Johns Hopkins Medical School, stein, however, was disinterested and could not grasp the study.

  4. 27 Rue de Fleurus: The Stein Salon. • Relocating to Paris with her two brothers, Michael, and Leo, the siblings shared living quarters on the left bank of Paris until 1914. • The household included a studio and it was here they gathered and accumulated works of art that would become immensely Popular in the modernistic world. • Artists such as: Matisse, Cezanne, and Picasso had their works portrayed in the studio—as the studio grew popular the artists would become fixated with the art on show.

  5. 27 Rue de Fleurus: The Stein Salon. • The studio would become notorious for famous modernist writers to come in and view the work of Picasso and Matisse as well as other Artists alike. • Joyce, Fitzgerald, Hemmingway were present at the weekly ‘’at home’’—where artists and writers would gather at the salon. • More and more frequently, people began visiting to see the Matisse paintings—and the Cézannes: "Matisse brought people, everybody brought somebody, and they came at any time and it began to be a nuisance, and it was in this way that Saturday evenings began.”

  7. Stein’s Literary Style. • Her works include novels, plays, stories, and poems repetitive, playful, and humorous style. • Completed Portrait of Picasso • Again, her support of modernistic approach and idea is identified through the stream- of- consciousness experiments, essays or portraits.

  8. Leo Stein Studies at Harvard Lived with Gertrude in Paris Split in 1914 resented Her infatuation with Alice Toklas. Described her as “a kind of abnormal vampire.” Moves to Florence, Italy marries in 1921
