  1. The modification of a 1 watt handheld laser for research applications. Casey Sennott – Engineering Mechanics and Astronautics Project Advisor: Prof. Scott Sanders

  2. The Wicked Spyder III Arctic is a powerful laser.

  3. Some specifications for the laser. • Wavelength: 445nm • Maximum Power: .85 W • Average Power Consumption: ~1.89 W • Efficiency: 44.5 % • Runtime on Battery: Approx. 38 min • Retail Cost: $300

  4. My goal was to adapt the laser for use in research: Adapt to AC power Couple to Optical Fiber Retain Portability

  5. I successfully integrated an aftermarket power supply into the laser.

  6. The laser was coupled to a fiber using a custom connector.

  7. This connector was selected to allow interfacing with the fused fiber. • A fused fiber was used to prevent damage to the glass in the case of contamination. • The size of the fused lens necessitated the use of a custom connector. • The final assembly couples with existing interface equipment.

  8. The final fiber configuration is shown below.

  9. Modification of additional lasers can be accomplished at minimal cost or time investment.

  10. The final product is a portable and cost effective research tool.
