At your new desk: • Students, please write your name on your agenda and checkout the contents of your OWL pouch. Put your agenda and OWL pouch inside your desk. • Parents, feel free to begin filling out any papers in the Riggs folder. You may return any paper work into the basket labeled Notes for Mrs. Weiand or return on Monday. • Students, if you ride a bus, pick up your bus pass and paper work on the back table. Please check out the donation request on the front board. • CURRICULUM PRESENTATION WILL BEGIN by 6:45pm.

  8. JA-BizTown An exciting feature of the fifth grade year is the ECONOMICS unit of study. Students learn about opportunity cost, scarcity, needs, wants and are involved in the process of completing job applications and resumes. This preparation leads to real life application at “JA-Biztown,” a Junior Achievement model city, which the students operate for one day. We are scheduled to visit JA Biztown on Wednesday, September 20th. We will be looking for a number of parent volunteers. As the time approaches, we will be recruiting you!

English Language Arts • Harcourt Journeys - reading textbook • Novel units (Frindle, Wonder, Where the Mountain Meets the Moon, Alice in Wonderland, and Among the Hidden) • Uses a variety of literature and genres • Reading, writing and grammar taught together • Spelling-phonics/skill based-Weekly spelling tests

  10. Accelerated Reader (AR) • 4 tests required each quarter • 1 written book report or project due each semester • If students’ goals are reached they attend the grade level Reward Party

Schedule 8:40-8:50-Attendance, Agenda, Announcements, Pledge 8:50-9:15- Math for Today/Problem of the Day 9:15-9:45-5th Grade Block 9:50-Quick Snack 9:50-11:00-Check Math homework/Math 11:00-11:40 Science 11:40-12:20-Recess/Lunch 12:20-1:00-WIN groups 1:00-1:40-Social Studies 1:40-3:00-Reading/Language Arts 3:00-3:10-Homework Review; Clean-up; Dismissal *Technology Class-Day 5 from 2:20-3:05pm; Library checkout-Day 5 from 8:50-9:10am.

Homework • Nightly homework will be given in math and language arts Monday through Thursday; science and social studies once a week • Quarterly projects (reading/social studies) • Independent reading nightly • Textbooks/Notebooks can go home to be used as a resource • 50 minutes • No Homework Pass/Extra Credit

  13. Communication • Agendas- used daily to record assignments and events. • Wednesday Camp Binder - all graded work will be organized in the binder and sent home to be looked at. Students will check grades on Infinite Campus and record in Camp binders.
