  1. IPES-IR3 Flame Sensor By Tim Quine ENGR 518

  2. Purpose • Detect fires in industrial applications such as refineries, paint productions, oil and gas boilers. • Send alarm signals to user’s receiving devices or alarm systems. • This is done via closed loop current signals.

  3. Device Characteristics • Enclosure Material – Stainless Steel Grade 316 or Aluminum 6061 • Weight – Stainless Steel 11 lbs. or Aluminum 5.5 lbs. • Cable – 6,200 ft. (18 AWG)

  4. Device Components LED Status Lights Explosive Proof Casing IR Detectors

  5. Differential Signaling Lesson

  6. Device Specifications • Detection type – optical via multiple spectrum IR Source. • Spectral Range – three points in the 4.0 to 5.0 micrometer range. • Power – 24 VDC nominal (3 Watts) • Operating Temp Range (-40 to 185 ) • Impact Resistance – 1.9 Joules • field of vision

  7. Square Law and Wavelengths

  8. Signaling • Outputs – Industry Standard 4-20 mA +/- 0.1 mA, 2 alarm relays, digital and analog.

  9. Sensitivity Stimuli modulated at 1.5 Hz and also un-modulated Field of vision

  10. ProbabilityReview • Times recorded previous slide • Range for 50 % of future measurement would fall in eqn: Range between 9.16 and 11.72 seconds

  11. False Alarms • Cost industries money due to down time . • Must know difference or the result could be catastrophic. • Uses microprocessor, algorithms, multiple sensors and wavelength range settings.

  12. Competitors Technologies • Bimetal thermal switches • Computer Imaging Programs • Smoke detectors • SAFE air sample analysis

  13. My Future Uses • Compressed Air Foam System • Small scale flame sensors • Detecting all fires
