  6. Is a virus a living thing? Structure of an influenza virus: http://micro.magnet.fsu.edu/cells/viruses/influenzavirus.html

  7. A virus attaches to a cell. The shape of the proteins on the outside of a virus matches the shape of proteins on a cell in the same way that puzzle pieces fit together. This tricks the cell into letting the virus pass through its membrane.

  8. Then, the virus releases its RNA into the cell. The cell does not know that this RNA is not its own. It copies the virus’ RNA and new viruses form inside the cell. Then, the new viruses break out of the cell and go on to attach to other cells.

  9. The influenza virus mutates (changes) easily. Therefore, the antibodies that your immune system produced last year to destroy influenza viruses may not be effective against this year’s influenza viruses.
