  2. Preliminaries Begin each day with: • The date • The project • Where you’re working • Other important info: Health concerns, weather, snakes, bees, ect.---All of these might affect your judgment or observations

  3. Field stations Each note-taking spot = new field station • Number stations • Start numbering over for each new project • Continue numbering for multi-day projects

  4. Field stations At each field station record the following: • Rock type(s)/rock unit(s) • Style and quality of exposure • Description(s) of rocks • Description(s) of geologic structures & cross-cutting relationships • Strike & dip and trend & plunge of structures

  5. Rock descriptions • Important things to include • Rock type (schist, arkose, gabbro, etc.) • Color on fresh and weathered faces • Grain size(s) • Major minerals • Descriptions of foliations, lineations, folds, joints, veins, etc. • Other distinguishing or important features
