A Previous Successful Improvement Strategy Aim of Project - Reduce wait time for surgery (Ortho) Improvement Sought - waitlist within boundary – 500 days, 365 days What areas - All Surgical initially then orthopaedics By When - Reviewed by April 2007 With what resources - • Waitlist grant, $5 Million. • Development of protocols to allow selection of patients to divert to secondary elective campus - Surgicentre
A Previous Successful Improvement Strategy- Key Changes Implemented • Development of special Surgicentre for project – within Osborne Park Hospital • A co-ordinated approach to management of the Waitlist • Focus was to pull all patients into boundary relating to 500 days and 365 days
A Previous Successful Improvement Strategy- Key Changes Implemented • Transferred to Surgicentre for treatment • > 500 days = 252 surgical patients • > 365 days = 27 surgical patients
A Previous Successful Improvement Strategy – Outcomes so Far • The introduction of the Surgical Waitlist initiative demonstrated • Total number of patients (cat 1 &2) exceeding waiting times of 500 days and 365 days = 1178 • Number of patients over 500 wait days who received procedure = 259 • Number of patients over 365 wait days who received procedure = 125
A Previous Successful Improvement Strategy – Lessons Learnt • What would you recommend to other organisations? • Coordinated waitlist management • Development of protocols to undertake surgery in elective only units • Maintain communication with key stakeholders • Introduce Clinical Priority Access Nurse for referral triage • Introduce Nurse Practitioner/Allied Health led clinics
