  2. When is colour used to describe things?, what things? • Colour was used throughout the story. • The doll house. • The Kelvey’s clothing. • Lil Kelvey’s face. • The lamp. • The gates in the courtyard • The big red drainpipe.

What sort of colours are used? • Bright colours through a dull lens. • “dark oily spinach green” • “bright yellow” • “chimneys……..painted red and white” • “yellow varnish, was like a little slab of toffee” • “Gold frames” • “red plush chairs” • “exquisite little amber lamp” • “green art-serge table cloth” • “long white dress” • “big red drain pipe” • “lil turned red”

How do the colours make us think/ feel/respond to the object of their description? • It gives you a clearer image. • Colour draws the readers focus. • The colours emphasize the characters and objects, and how other characters act towards them. • It made the readers feel the general moods of the colours. • For example the red drain pipe enhances lil’sembarassement.

  5. What role does colour play in setting, tone, or mood at different points in the story? • There is an extensive range of colours used at the start when describing the doll house. • It creates a jovial mood. • As the story progresses less and less is used, causing the mood to darken. • At the end there is only one colour left, which can be interpreted to create either a negative mood or positive mood.
