  1. BRANCHES OF ENGINEERING

  2. Engineering may be divided into a number of major traditional branches. The largest are electrical, mechanical, civil and chemical engineering. There also exist several specialized areas that may be characterized as subfields of the major branches.

  3. Electrical Engineering- designs electrical components, electrical systems Mechanical Engineering- designs cars, airplanes, thermal designs and mechanical parts Civil Engineering- designs buildings, streets Chemical Engineering- designs medicines Computer Engineering- designs hard/software..

  4. MECHANICAL ENGINEERING Mechanical engineering, as the name implies, deals with the mechanics of operation of mechanical systems. The various functions that fall within the scope of this branch of engineering are designing, manufacturing and maintenance of mechanical systems. For this purpose it uses the various laws of physics and applies them to different systems to analyze their performance and map out ways to improve their efficiency.

  5. APPLICATIONS OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING Mechanical engineers are involved in the design and construction of various pieces of equipment like aircrafts, spacecrafts, and automobiles, stationary structures like buildings and bridges and industrial machinery. Due to the fact that mechanical engineers have to deal with a wide range of issues relating to different fields during the course of their work, the mechanical engineering program is prepared to provide them with the basic knowledge of different areas of study. .

Just as chemical engineers try to make different chemical processes cost-effective, mechanical engineers also try to make the production and maintenance of different machines economical and efficient. Mechanical engineers also have to deal with one additional issue. The machines designed and manufactured by these mechanical engineers will be used by general community who do not have any knowledge about their operation. So, they will have to consider the safety and durability factors of these machines also while designing them.

  7. Mechanical engineering is finding more and more applications these days in other areas of engineering also. The most significant of these is the field of robotics. Robotics has become an important area of study due to the fact that more and more processes are getting automated these days. Mechanical engineers are handed the task of manufacturing assembly lines of robots for different operations and controlling them through pre-written programs to make the process of manufacture less human dependent, and more efficient and economical.

  8. MECHANICAL ENGINEERS-EDUCATION Mechanical Engineering programs typically take 4+ years and result in a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSc).

  9. CAREER PATHS FOR MECHANICAL ENGINEERS After obtaining a degree in Mechanical Engineering, many will begin to focus on an area of specialization and will pursue a secondary degree or will enter the workforce full time within that area of specialization. There are also several tools that Mechanical Engineers use that require hands on use to become experts. These tools are usually involved in CAD (Computer Aided Design)or CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing). These tools allow for models and analysis to take place before a product is prototyped.

  10. Some Mechanical Engineers go on to get a postgraduate degree such as a Master of Science (MSc). There is also a Doctor of Philosophy program (PhD) that consists of a significant research and is usually an entry point to an academic career.
