  2. The Flow of Energy • Plants convert the suns energy into a form of energy that can be used for all living things.

  3. The Flow of Energy • 2 categories of reactions: • Endergonic • Examples: Toasting a marshmallow • Playing a cd • Driving your car • All require an input of energy.

  4. The Flow of Energy • 2 categories of reactions • Exergonic: • Examples: Burning a log • Fireworks • Oil/gas burned in a furnace • Waterfall • All give off large amounts of energy

  5. The Flow of Energy • Both reactions are linked. • The energy released from the burning log is used to toast the marshmallow. • Exergonic reactionsprovide energy for endergonic reactions.

  6. The Flow of Energy • Free energy- the energy available to do work • muscle contraction • active transport of substances • making proteins • All require Free Energy.

  7. The Flow of Energy • In a cell, Exergonic reactions provide energy for Endergonic reactions. • Energy needs to be transferred. • HOW? • A T P

  8. The Flow of Energy • Free energy is stored in ATP • Structure: • A-P-P-P • A=adenosine and P-P-P=phosphate. • Free energy is released when –P bond is broken producing ADP (A-P-P), a free P, and energy

  9. The Flow of Energy • Example: • Combine glucose & fructose to make sucrose. • Glucose + Fructose Sucrose (Endergonic) • ATP ADP + P (exergonic) • Do you see the linkage between the rxs.?
