  2. Mongol Empire • Mongols were nomadic warriors who lived in the plains of NW China • Originally Mongols lived as an independent family • In 1206 they were united together by Temujin • He defeated rivals for leadership& became khan • Took the name Genghis Khan

  3. Mongol Empire • Khan used military force to conquer China • Nomadic people have an advantage over settled people • Settled people goal was to defend their town/city • Nomads moved quickly and looked for weak spots • By 1221, Mongols conquered all of Central Asia

Genghis Khan • In 25 years, Khan conquered a larger area & greater population than the Romans did in four centuries • Khan forbade the kidnapping of women • He outlawed livestock rustling and established a winter-only hunting season • He guaranteed freedom of religion, protecting the rights of Buddhists, Muslims, Christians, and Hindus alike • The Great Khan also protected enemy envoys and ambassadors, no matter what message they brought

Genghis Khan Dies • Genghis Khan dies in 1227 & his son Ogadai takes power • Ogadai captures the rest of northern China & extended the empire to Russia & Persia • Divided the empire into 4 parts called khanates (ruled by Khan decedants) • Kublai Khan (grandson) attacked the Song Empire in 1279
