General thoughts: • Like cars- look for version 2+ • Look for a company • -that has been around a couple of years • -has money in the bank • -Long haul has telecom experience • -Metro does more than optronics • Look for indepth NMS capabilities • How do you want to use this transport equipment • for the next 3-5 years (ref: T.West statement) • -ring • -linear • -protection capability

  3. Details: • -rack space • -common chassis • -APS • -ROADM (max filter choice) • -8 lambda per transponder (min. part numbers) • -GMPLS (control plane options) • -Auto power adjust • -NDPS

  4. Details: (continued) • -ITU-T frequencies (spacings supported) • -how many bands C, L … • -per lambda stats • -per lambda stats per encoded protocol • -O to O (??need??) • -LAN PHY & WAN PHY • -How are redundant lambda switched • -configuration tools (incorporating design options)

  5. Like to have: • -common chassis for 5 years + • -lasers switchable over the ITU-T spectrum • -ROADM now • -combined function on a substrate • -per lambda monitoring • -cost of L2/L3 equipment but! • -reliability of SONET equipment • -maximum monitoring • -modular function pushed to a L2/L3 equipment
