  1. British Working Class Youths. Janeece Bryant – Waterloo Road.

  2. Clips of Janeece: • <iframe title="YouTube video player" width="640" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Kb7q7ZttOWU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRcsA-XU4ik&feature=channel

  3. Character Background: • Janeece was known as one of the louder members of the class. She dated Bolton, however they broke up when he could not handle the amount of attention that she was receiving after getting her boob job. • Once leaving school, Janeece returned as the school secretary, but she was pregnant. • She gave birth to baby Cheryl, but then gave her to Ruby, who was struggling to conceive, even with IVF. Janeece then realised how much she loved her daughter, and got her back.

  4. How can you tell they are working class? • We can see that Janeece is working class by the way that she talks. This can be seen both in her accent and her phraseology. Through using phrases such as ‘dead nice’. • She talks very quickly, and is not the most intelligent character. • Her costume shows that she is working class through things such as her gold hoop earrings and her big curly hair.

  5. Continued.... • Her uniform is always adapted, i.e. We often see her in a leather jacket and a short skirt. • She carries around an attitude with her, which can be seen in her stance and her pout. • The storylines that she has been given, such as the one night stand pregnancy story, have shown a representation of working class youths, as many young people in Britain are becoming pregnant at a young age. Her language has helped to develop her character, and the use of colloquial phrases will help the audience to relate to her.

  6. Point of view: • In Waterloo Road, we mainly see her storylines from her point of view, for example in the baby adoption story, the audience was encouraged to feel sympathy for her character as they saw that she actually loved Cheryl and did not want to give her to Ruby. • The audience were the first to see her real emotions, as no other characters were aware of her true feelings.

  7. Opinions of her character: • The other characters in the programme mainly have respect for her, as they let her have a job at the school. • However, through her schooling life she has had a few run-ins with other students because of the fact that she is not afraid to speak her mind, and this sometimes got her into trouble. • The audience are made to love her and to also laugh at her on occasions because of her accent or her mannerisms and outgoing nature.

  8. Typical working class?: • Her character is a representation of a typical working class youth to an extent. • The fact that she got pregnant at a young age is typical of a teenage girl of her nature nowadays, as teenage pregnancy is on the rise. • Her clothes and accent represent working class, things such as wearing a tracksuit and large hoop earrings, which are not representations of wealth. • Also because she is not the most intelligent of people, this could show that she is working class.
