  1. Multiple Literacies Project Laura Myers Mr. David Adams English 111 August 31, 2012

  2. What is a Literacy? My English 111 class required for me to make a project that discusses my literacies. A “literacy” is knowing information about a certain topic. Although I may have many literacies, I have picked a few to present to you. These literacies also have a way of showing you a little bit of who I am.

  3. My Literacies • Ski Racing • Showing Horses • Gardening Seed • Twitter

  4. Ski Racing Although I've been ski racing for four years, I'm not exactly an superstar. However, if you were to discuss the sport with me I could go on and on. For the competitive racing part of the sport, you ski around "gates." Gates are the plastic poles that are screwed into the snow that racers ski around. To protect yourself from the gates, you would wear shinners, pole guards, a GS suit, and a face guard.

  5. Ski Racing Continued.. Shinners protect your shins. Pole guards protect your hands. A GS suit is full body spandex with pads on the biceps and thighs. A face guard wraps around the front of your helmet about six inches away from it, that way a gate doesn't hit your face. None of this equipment is exactly "comfortable," but it does keep you safe! 6. Showing Horses One sport I've participated in for three years was horse showing. It's a sport that many have watched even though they don't know the rules. My favorite event while showing my horse was "Barrel Racing." When it comes to Barrel Racing, you race around plastic barrels on your horse. One main rule is that you have to go left around the first barrel (coming from the left side), right of the second, and right of the third. You are not aloud to stop or go in reverse.

  7. Showing Horses Continued.. To barrel race you use a "Western" style saddle. A western saddle has a “saddle horn”, which is part of the saddle you can hold onto to stay on the horse. The back also goes up about 3-5 inches (depending on the saddle) that way you can plant your butt in the saddle so you don't fall off. Saddle Horn

  8. Gardening Seed The main reason why I am so literate in gardening seed is because I have worked at Tices Farm Market in Clare for the past two summers. Customers always come in to ask me about what seeds they should use in their garden. For example, if they want certain types of cucumbers, there are different types of seeds.

  9. Gardening Seed Continued.. "Poinsettia" cucumbers mean that you are growing pickling cucumbers, which are cucumbers that are between 3 and 5 inches long. "Marketmore" cucumbers are the cucumbers you would cut up for your salad. One thing about the seeds for these, is that they look exactly the same. Regular Poinsettia Cucumber Pickling Cucumber

  10. Twitter Twitter is one of the most recent social networking sites online. Because as of tonight I have 5,911 tweets, I believe I am very credible and literate. You post "tweets" or thoughts that are under 140 characters. Posting photos with your tweets is also allowed. Most of the time if you post more than 100 tweets an hour, you get sent to “Twitter Jail.” In Twitter Jail, Twitter doesn’t let you tweet for two to three hours.

  11. More Twitter.. • On Twitter you "follow" people. Following people just means that you get to see whatever that person posts, whenever they post it. You can "retweet" what those people say. Retweeting is when you repost what someone has said. "Favoriting" is a way of clicking a button saying you like what that person is saying. Twitter also allows people to "Direct Message." Direct Messaging is when you can send someone on Twitter a message that is private.

  12. What Makes My Literacies, My Literacies • Becoming literate in these sports areas have helped me immensely in life. Ski racing and horse showing have broadened my social life and taught me to be somewhat competitive. • I know you probably think that gardening seed is a weird topic, being literate about substances that are very alike, but also so different has helped me learn how to pay attention to what I'm doing. I know my boss would not have appreciated if I sold a customer the wrong seeds and they came back unhappy. • Twitter has taught me self control. Sometimes people post stupid stuff that I want to comment back to, but know I probably shouldn't. This site has helped me gain the control to keep my mouth shut.
