  1. Warmup • Start a warmup sheet for the week. Label the days appropriately. • Tuesday 8/13/13 – • Answer the following question in a full and complete sentence: • Why are using correct grammar, punctuation and spelling important?

  2. 5 requirements for a sentence 1.Start with a capital letter 2.Have end punctuation(. ? !) 3.Have a subject(S) 4.Have a verb(V) 5.Make sense

  4. Give me 5 • 2’s tell 1’s – give them 5 • 1’s tell 2’s – give them 5

  5. On your paper… • Trace your hand… • On each finger write the requirements of a sentence.

  6. The subject… The subject is the person, place, thing, quality, or idea that the sentence is about. • John went for a walk. (Person) • Towns are quiet after snowfalls. (Place) • Eggs rolled off the counter. (Things) • Silence is golden. (Quality) • Peace is at hand. (Idea)

  7. The Action verb… A verb is a word that shows the action of the subject of the sentence. • Examples: • Body ActionsMind Actions • walk think • run wonder • write want

  8. Linking Verbs • Words that link the subject to another word that describes the subject. Am Was Are Were Is Seem Be Been Become

  10. Identify verbs and subjects (in that order) in the following sentences. Label verbs; action, helping, or linking. • 1) He grew. • 2) She was pale. • 3) I had a bad day. • 4) You seem sick. • 5) I might throw up.

  12. Imposters • Just like in the fashion world, people try to make you believe that the fake handbags are real… in grammar certain things try to pose as the subject and verb.

  13. Infinitives Imposter # 1 is an Infinitive. Since it has a verb in it, it tries to trick you into thinking it is the verb of the sentence. Ex. Madonna loves to sing.

  14. Infinitives to + a verb Watch out! “To” can also be a preposition! Examples: • To run, to throw, to dance • To think, to imagine, to remember • To be, to feel, to seem

  15. Identify the infinitives, verbs, and subjects in the following sentences. • 1) He grew to like her annoying voice. • 2) She was to lovely pale. • 3) I had a bad day because I had to work at my parent’s store. • 4) You seem to sick to work. • 5) I might have to throw up.

  16. Prepositions Imposter #2 is a prepositional phrase. Since it has a noun in it, it tries to trick you into thinking it is the subject of the sentence. Ex. He jumped over the fence.
