In 1675, Bacon's Rebellion erupted in colonial Virginia, driven by discontent among indentured servants and farmers over the harsh realities of tobacco farming, including falling prices, high taxes, and lack of available land. Led by Nathaniel Bacon, disenchanted farmers and servants launched attacks on Native American lands and wealthy plantations, culminating in the burning of Jamestown. Though Bacon's sudden death quelled the rebellion, it prompted the Virginia Assembly to lower taxes and drastically shifted labor practices, leading to the expansion of slavery in the colonies.
