GBK Geometry Week 1, Day 2

Today’s plan includes greetings, reviewing classroom rules, and an introduction to Euclid’s geometrical constructions. Students will engage in hands-on labs using GeoGebra to reinforce their understanding of equilateral triangles. They'll also set up their Khan Academy accounts for online practice. Supplies such as compasses, rulers, and pencils will be checked to ensure everyone is prepared. Homework will be assigned via email, with tasks due before the next class. Don’t forget to clean up and push in your chairs!

  3. Homework / Supplies Check • Take out: • 3 colors of pen/pencil • Paper • Notebook/binder • Compass • Ruler • Protractor • Have them ready for me to check while you work.

  4. Rules (~2 min) • Read the list • Identify sentences that are saying the same thing • Decide which is better, or if you would phrase it differently • Cross out rules you don’t want to keep

  5. Rules – Groups (~2 min) • Discuss your choices • Mark or circle rules you want to keep as-is • Write new versions of any that need changing

Constructions &Equilateral triangles • Equilateral triangle: one whose sides are all of equal length (and angles are all of equal size) • Task: • Draw a line segment of length 12cm using your ruler; label its ends A and B. • Set your compass to the length of the segment, and draw an arc centered at A, then another arc centered at B. • Label the intersection point C. Bonus: If that wasreally easy, try a regularhexagon (i.e., one whosesides are all equal).

  9. Constructions &Equilateral Triangles • This was a construction: a figure designed to satisfy given conditions. • This diagram’s condition: all sides are of equal length. • “Construct” usually means using a compass and a straightedge.
