  1. Acceleration

  2. Acceleration-the rate of change of velocity (remember: velocity=speed w/direction) • When the velocity of an object changes, the object is accelerating

  3. Acceleration occurs when an object changes its speed, its direction, orboth • If the speed is increasing—positive acceleration • If the speed is decreasing—negative acceleration (deceleration)

  4. Ex. Of acceleration: • Horse on a carousel-IS ACCELERATING due to the constant changing direction of the horse’s circular motion

  5. How to find Acceleration: • Equation: • Acceleration = change in velocity / time • OR • Acceleration = final velocity – initial velocity / time • *Reported in m/s/s or m/s^2 • If motion is in a straight line (no direction change), change in speed can be used to calculate velocity

  6. Visualizing Acceleration-pg. 49 • Amusement Park Acceleration • Wooden and Steel roller coaster provide different thrills due to different materials • Wooden—swaying effect • Steel-more loops, steep inclines, drops, etc.
