5. Appalachian Trail • Runs through some of the Northeastern and Southeastern States • Largest marked foot path • Stretches from Georgia to Maine • Built from 1921 to 1937 by volunteers

6. The Making of the Mountains Old as the Hills • Appalachians are one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world -250 million year ago • These mountains have been worn down by water, ice, and wind • Glaciers once covered a part of the Northeast

7. Glaciers • a huge sheet of ice that slowly moves across the land • moved over some of the Appalachians for thousands of years • carried tons of rock and soil away • made the mountains lower and rounder

The Making of the Mountains The Fall Line • East of the Appalachian Mountains lies a low plateau • Fall line- is where the hard rock of the mountains and the plateau meets the softer rock of the Coastal Plain • Flowing water wears away at the soft rock • Streams and rivers create waterfalls at the fall line

Mountains and Factories The Industrial Revolution • Industrial Revolution • a major change, starting in the 1800’s • in which new power driven machines replaced hand tools • goods could be produced much faster • Factories soon became as important as farms in the Northeast • Factories were producing goods of all kinds from shoes to tools to furniture
