  2. The Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) was developed to make content material comprehensible to English Language Learners.

  4. Teacher Preparation write clearly defined content objectives on the board for students. write clearly defined language objectives . Concepts should be appropriate for the age and educational background of students. Teachers must consider the students' L1 literacy, second language proficiency, and the reading level of the materials.

  5. Teacher Preparation • Supplementary materials are used to promote comprehension. • Content must be adapted to Ell's needs through use of graphic organizers, outlines, labeling of pictures, study guides, adapted text, and highlighted text. • Meaningful activities integrate lesson concepts with language practice opportunities in listening.

  6. Building Background • Link concepts to student's background experience. • Bridge past learning to new concepts . • Emphasize key vocabulary .

  7. Comprehensible Input • HOW TO ACHIEVE COMPREHENSIBLE INPUT: • Use expression and body language . • Speak slowly and clearly with pauses between phrases . • Use short sentences with simple syntax . • Use action verbs .

  8. Comprehensible Input • Repeat and review vocabulary . • Use visuals and graphic organizers . • Communicate in oral , written , physical and pictorial formats . • Provide hands-on and cooperative learning activities . • Provide step-by-step modeling for academic tasks .

  9. Strategies • Provide ample opportunities for students to use learning strategies. • use scaffolding techniques consistently . • Use a variety of question types.

  10. Interaction • Interaction provide the following for Ells: • frequent opportunities for interactions and discussion between teacher/student and among students, and encourage elaborated responses. • grouping which supports language and content objectives. • Provide sufficient wait time for student responses. • Give ample opportunities for students to clarify key concepts in L1.

  11. Practice/Application • Provide hands-on materials or manipulative for students to practice using new content knowledge. • Provide activities for students to apply content and language knowledge. • Provide activities that integrate all language skills. (reading, writing, listening and speaking).

  12. Lesson Delivery • Support content objectives clearly. • Support language objectives clearly. • Engage students approximately 90-100% of the period. • Pace the lesson appropriately to the students’ ability level.

  13. Review/Assessment • Give a comprehensive review of key vocabulary. • Give a comprehensive review of key content concepts. • Provide feedback to students regularly on their output (I.e., language, content, work). • Conduct assessments of student comprehension and learning throughout lesson on all lesson objectives.

  15. Disadvantages time –consuming ,and overwhelming about implementing content and language delivery strategies. It costs a lot of money to go through authentic and meaningful SIOP trainings to make difference in teaching and learning .
