  4. There Can Be More Than One • There can be more than one cause and effect. CAUSE CAUSE The girl studied every night and got help from a tutor so she did well on the test. EFFECT

  5. Use An Organizer • She did well on the test • There can be more than one cause and effect. MORE THAN 1 CAUSE ONE EFFECT • She got help from a tutor • Girl studied every night The girl studied every night and got help from a tutor so she did well on the test.

  6. Which Comes First • In the real world a cause always comes first. • In writing an author may tell you the cause first and sometimes the effect first. EFFECT EFFECT The snowman melted and puddles formed on the ground because of the heat from the sun. CAUSE

  7. Good Cause-Effect: • Clearly distinguishes between a cause and an effect. • Establishes a clear thesis statement. • Presents information in an effective order.

  8. Planning a cause-and-effect essay • Listen to the event or condition you want to address. • Brainstorm to generate ideas about either its causes or its effects. • Do additional research on your topic if necessary. As part of prewriting draw diagram or demonstrate these relationships graphically. • Check to be sure you have not drawn any faulty conclusions.

  9. Cause and effect essay structure and format • Thesis statement (mentions the general effect of the situation mentioning three causes that lead to such an effect) • Ex. Child violence is caused by lack of parental attention, parental abuse and parental immaturity. • First cause (a more detailed look on lack of parental attention with two minor supports) • Second cause (a more detailed look on parental abuse using two minor supports) • Third cause (a more detailed look on parental immaturity with the help of two minor supports)

  10. Language To explain reasons and results, we use: For causes:because, due to, on cause is, another is, since, for, first, second, the main reason why, there are other reasons, too. For Effects: consequently, as a result, thus, resulted in, one result is, another is, therefore.

  11. Follow these steps when writing a cause and effect essay • Distinguish between cause and effect. To determine causes, ask, "Why did this happen?" To identify effects, ask, "What happened because of this?" • Develop your thesis statement. State clearly whether you are discussing causes, effects, or both. Introduce your main idea, using the terms "cause" and/or "effect."

  12. Find and organize supporting details. Back up your thesis with relevant and sufficient details that are organized. You can organize details in the following ways: • Chronological. Details are arranged in the order in which the events occurred. • Order of importance. Details are arranged from least to most important or vice versa. • Categorical. Details are arranged by dividing the topic into parts or categories. • Use appropriate transitions.
