Synopsis of the events: A few teaspoons of anthrax-contaminated powder in envelopes were dropped into a mailbox in Princeton, N.J. eventually killing five people, sickening 17 others, temporarily crippling mail service and forcing the evacuation of federal buildings, including Senate offices and the Supreme Court. Resolution: In July 2008, Bruce E. Ivins, an Army scientist who worked with anthrax at the biodefense center at Fort Detrick in Frederick, Md., killed himself after learning that federal prosecutors were preparing to indict him for the attacks.
