  3. What ways does your media products use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

  4. Narrative Theory Barthes's theory shows how a product of the media can present the negotiated feelings of the watcher. In regards to my film, Barthes’s theory follows the forms and conventions included into my short film. As ‘Lovey Dovey’ has a target audience of girls between the ages of 12-24, the film attracts many young girls who have had experiences of crush’s, attraction and young love. The film is all about a young girl obsessed with a boy who does not love her back, she results in buying love potion chocolates and tricks him into falling in love with her. This allows our target audience to empathise with the actions of George and it becomes humorous to them as it is of a similar age and emotion of a teenage girl.

  5. Narrative Theory Todorov’s theory of equilibrium in a film relates well to my film as it matches the five stages. A state of equilibrium at the outset is in the beginning scene where George is happy and singing in a dance, thinking of her lover, Ali. A disruption of the equilibrium by some action would be when Miss Tree sells George the love potion chocolates to put a spell of love to Ali and he eats them. A recognition that there has been a disruption is when Ali hits his head on the fence and knocks himself out, but knocking the spell out of him as well. An attempt to repair the disruption is when George takes Ali, who is unconscious, to her house. A reinstatement of the equilibrium is when a shot is shown of George happy that she has Ali in her room.

  6. Mise en Scene Mise en scene was a very important aspect to the film as it allowed the audience to realise what type of film it was, what emotions are being portrayed and the importance in the difference between the two main character. These were represented through the use of costumes, props and scenery. In the first scene, George is wearing colourful and bright clothing to represent her personality and attitude towards life and more importantly, love. The song sung by Ellie Goulding is a perfect representative of the emotions that George is feeling, such as ‘We live in a beautiful world, yeah we do!’ This sends a message to the audience that George is a character who see’s the world in a positive way and that her happiness might be contributed by the love of someone. This is revealed when we introduce Ali. The costumes throughout the film are contrasting in regards to George and Ali. This is purposely included to represent a sense of dissimilarity as the storyline is based on a stalker who falls in love with a match that could not be more wrong for her and her perky personality. To represent this fully, we dressed Ali in grunge styled clothing such as black skinny jeans, Dark T-Shirts and jumpers and grease styled hair. In contrast, George was dressed in Bright coloured tights, flower patterned skirts, colourful cardigans and tops and then funky accessories such as glasses, scarves, clips and jewellery. This was all used to present the fact that she was too ugly and unusual for Ali to fall for and in the end, this resulted in George becoming a stalker.

  7. Towards the end of the film, George turns into a beautiful young lady wearing a sexy red dress and revealing her long, curly hair. This was included in the film to present Ali’s ideal dream girl through his involuntary imagination caused by the spell that George cast’s on him to make him fall in love with her. This scene was set outside and the consistency of outside filming throughout the film was ideal as it allowed the audience to grasp the idea of stalking and how every scene outside could signify that it’s on a daily bases. Another aspect to the film’s Mise en scene w was the editing of lighting, contrast, exposure and saturation. The lighting w was manipulated where certain scenes s such as the introduction ‘we live in a b beautiful world’ scene, was too bright. As t the filming was done outside, we had a few m minor problems which led to facial e expressions not being clear because the l light was too bright on George’s face.

  8. In the film Tamara Drewe, the bright lighting, colourful costumes and outside filming were all used intentionally to represent the character of Tamara Drewe’s perky, cheeky and bright personality. In ‘Lovey Dovey’ we also made all of the Mise en Scene relate to George’s personality so that the audience can easily determine her character and how its relevant to the storyline.

  9. In ‘Kickass’ the movie, the costumes chosen for the three boys are representing a message to the audience that they are teenagers with different music and fashion sense to anyone else. The dark colours from the clothing presents a sad, lonely and maybe isolated character which is along the same representations we wanted for Ali.

  10. Key scene 1 The first key scene in the film is where George is confronted by Miss Tree and sells George the love potion chocolates to put a spell on Ali. In this scene we used a number of shots to show the full mystic feeling to this scene. We started off with choosing the location and we ended up filming the scene in the graveyard of the church in our town. We thought this was a sensible and good choice to film this scene here because it was intended to have an eerie and haunting effect as this reflects the type of character that Miss Tree is. The lighting was very good on this day as it was raining and dull and this also added to the haunting feeling that we wanted to put across. In the editing though, we had to slightly brighten the faces of the George and Miss Tree as the dullness from the weather almost hid their facial expressions. In the part where Miss Tree persuades George to take the chocolates, we edited her voice and slowed it down to give her voice a deeper sound. This was because we wanted her to sound mysterious and to give the audience a message that she is up to something or has a plan. We used mostly close up shots to present to the audience the facial expressions of the characters and the messages that they are sending across to each other and to the audience. Such as; When Miss Tree is holding the box of chocolates and she is persuading George to buy them, we had a close up shot of her face to show her manipulation and slyness. We then zoomed in to get an even closer shot of her face to give the audience a chance to capture the full craftiness and mystery of the character of Miss Tree.

  11. Key scene 2 The second key scene of my short film would have to be when George drop’s off the chocolates at his house and runs behind the house to hide from him. This was a scene that was particularly difficult because there were a lot of shots that we had to fit in without it looking disjointed because we mixed two lots of scene into one. The first part to the scene involved George outside Ali’s house, and nervously drops off the chocolates on his door mat. Firstly, we filmed George’s legs walking up towards Ali’s house. This was to enable the audience to have a main focus of George, and her bright blue tights was also an indication that it was the character of George, but also the house in the background. The slow shot that gradually moved up George’s body was to indicate a sense of anxiety. The most challenging part to this scene was when we were filming George running around the side of the house. We had to take about 5 different shots to capture the excitement and happiness in George’s face and body language. In every shot, the camera was placed in a different angle to make the movement of George easy and flowing. Inside the house is Ali, we thought that in between the ‘running behind the house’ shots of George, we would have Ali doing day to day jobs. We tried our best to place the sound of the door bell in the correct place so that it would be in sync with the scene. When Ali opens the door to find he chocolates, we slowly followed him with the camera down the floor, so it was almost as if the audience was finding them too. At this moment of finding the chocolates Coldplay started to play to create a sense of mischief, it was also a music choice that related to Ali’s grunge and emo style. In the scene with Ali in the house, we moved the camera around a lot and took a number of shots to fully present the meaning of this scene. The continuous shots of Ali looking for food were all to build up to the answer of finally eating the chocolates. We then had a still shot of Ali looking at the chocolates, and on purpose we made him take a long time to get them, keeping the audience on the edge of their seat. We decided to use slow motion when Ali eats the chocolates because it’s a key moment in the film and also because we wanted to portray the feeling you would have when eating chocolates that have a massive effect on you.

  12. Key Scene 3 The last key scene that was in our short film was the second to last scene when Ali finds George but the effects of the Love potion from the chocolates has cheated his vision and made him see George as a beautiful woman. In this scene, we took many shots of Ali running towards George and with this we added Katy Perry’s ‘Firework’ instrumental. This was chosen because its upbeat and fast and the feelings that Ali is having are very excited, anxious and overwhelming as he is about to meet the girl, literally, from his dreams. We took many shots of his facial expressions so that the audience could connect with his emotions and so that it was also easy to follow as this scene is very important to the audience’s view. We used a shot of George doing a typical ‘beautiful girl’ action such as swishing her hair around to attract Ali. To make this even more eccentric, we slowed it down using Photoshop, and this gave it a great effect, presenting the true beauty of George through Ali’s eyes. We also made this scene of George, through Photoshop - ‘Romantic’ style. This was too portray a sense that it’s a dream, and through the eyes of Ali, it is presented as one, although the audience know its real because it goes back to normal with George with her hair up. The music carries on until Ali hits his head on the fence and its back to reality. We used a camera shot that was looking directly at George from the ground as if it were Ali. Through editing, we made it stop and start and lighter and darker so that it was a realistic view from someone who had just hit their head.

  13. Key Scene 4 This scene is very similar to ‘Lovey Dovey’ when George is following Ali. In ‘About a Boy’ the camera used mid shots of the ‘stalker’ to present the facial expressions and also the body language. This allows the audience to see the reactions of their faces and the subtle and discrete body movements used when hiding from the person they are stalking. We used these types of shots in the beginning scene with George following Ali as it lets the audience get an immediate message what type of Character George is and what she does. In the film ‘About a Boy’ starring Hugh Grant, A scene is added when Marcus is following Will around to find out more about him and his life.

  14. Title Shot’s In these three title shots, I found the successful films presented their Title shots in a way that it reflected its genre. The title shot from Avatar is a black background with piercing blue writing. With a 237million budget, you can see by this title that the film is a big blockbuster by its bold writing and black background. The ‘Love Actually’ title shot clearly shows that it’s a romantic film and we used this as inspiration for our title shot, having the ‘love’ in red. In ‘District 9’ you can tell by the presentation of the background that it’s a horror film. The use of bits of blood is a clear indication towards the audience that it’s a scary film. In ‘Lovey Dovey’ we put the word ‘Love’ in red to represent either romance or danger, in our film it can relate to both. The background was done using a rustic style showing its lighthearted.

  15. Scenes inspired by existing movie’s When deciding on a storyline for our film, we researched many films and key moments within them to try and get an idea of what we wanted. We compared Disney with Realistic films and came up with a really good idea. In Harry Potter 5, a girl named Romilda Vane creates chocolates with a love potion in them to make Harry Potter fall in love with her. We thought that this was a really good idea for our film as we wanted something quirky and funny. We then thought of how these Chocolates become in possession of the main character and then we thought of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. In this Disney film, The evil queen gives innocent Snow White a poisonous apple. We really like the way this was created and we wanted to make our film have a hint of fairytale to it to add to its quirkiness.

  16. Use of iMovie During the course of the short film making, the use of iMovie was used in regards to the lighting, saturation, sound, contrast and exposure. This allows us to change certain aspects to the film such as the Scene when George is walking along and singing to herself. This, when filmed in natural light, was too bright and it was hard for the audience to see her facial expressions. On iMovie, I was enable to lower the brightness and saturation and deepen the contrast in order for it to darken and expose the darker parts to the scene. Another scene in which iMovie helped us to create a more professional film, was when Kate’s voice slowed down with the ‘slow motion’ feature. This gave Kate’s voice an eary sound to it and added to her mysterious character.

  17. Use of Photoshop The use of Photoshop was very important in relation to Our film poster because it allowed us to manipulate the colours of the pictures and the placing of the writing. Photoshop is made with layers upon which you add another detail or aspect to your page. In the poster, The background was firstly made with a white variant as the white becomes darker at the bottom. The pink flowers were added from a smudge tool to create a sense of feminism and sensitivity. The picture of George and Ali was cropped just around their bodies and brightened slightly to enhance the colour comparison. The writing was added through the ‘text box’. This allowed us to write what we wanted and place it in the appropriate spots. The way in which the writing ‘sometimes love is sickly sweet’ was made into a wave was through the different styles in which we could choose one that best suited the genre of the film, we chose waves with a a purple ribbon behind it, showing that the target audience is directed at girls.

  18. Use of InDesign InDesign was a programme that we used to create double page spread articles. In my double page spread, I used InDesign tools to benefit the professionalism of my outcome. I firstly used ‘text boxes’ to place my writing area and then I divided the page into 4 columns to present the forms and conventions. As InDesign presents such a broad sheet, the use of pictures were easy to include and the use if ‘Colour tool’ allowed me to match My pictures with the writing.

  19. Music There were many types of music used in our short film. They include ‘Beautiful world’ Ellie Goulding, ‘Firework’ Katy Perry, ‘Harry Potter’ instrumental, Coldplay, ADTR. A type of music and go along a way in regards to helping the audience communicate with the feeling and emotions of the actor or scene. In ‘Lovey Dovey’, ‘Beautiful world’ is there to present happiness and optimism. The comparison scene is then used with two different types of music. ADTR to show that Ali is a bit if a emo kid who doesn’t care about too much. Harry Potter is then used for George as this reflects her excitement and spontaneous character. We then move onto the more mysterious side to the film, when Miss Tree enters. The music here was used to show eeriness so we used one of the scary and intense instrumentals from Harry Potter.

  20. To present George’s keenness and happiness, we added Ellie Goulding ‘Guns and Horses’ as it has a strong beat and rhythm and it allows the audience to feel a sense of excitement too. The scene in which Ali finds George after the eating of the chocolates, we used Katy Perry’s ‘Firework’ as it’s a very colourful song with lots of energy and excitement and that’s what it needs to present these types of emotions towards the audience. At the end, where Ali is in George’s bed, we wanted this to come across as slightly creepy so we added another harry potter instrumentals, but I think this just added ti the intensity of the scene.

  23. Audience feedback • The use of editing was used appropriately and it was done to make sure simple things such as facial expressions were saw. • Camera shots were used well to express the feelings of the actors. i.e George running around the house, this was good as the different shots of her face presented her sense of excitement and fulfilment. • The music was slightly disjointed but after some editing it flowed better and you were able to sense the smoothness and continuity of the scenes through the music. • Costumes were used well to differentiate the two character. Ali in dark clothing to show his look on life and love. George in bright colours to show her bright and happy personality. • Use of music was used well as it also helped the audience tell the difference as when ever a character was on screen, the music used always suited what they were feeling and their typical personality. • Maybe fade put Ali’s screaming at the end to give it a more long lasting effect. • Add a better opening scene to introduce the film more. We then added a scene of George and Ali meeting and him being rude, again shows personalities immediately.

  24. How effective is the combination of your main products and ancillary texts? It is very important to make sure that the ancillary texts relate to the film. In producing the poster, we made sure that the costumes were the same costumes that we dressed Ali and George in the film. We also added the chocolate box into George’s hand to also make it obvious to the audience that they were a key object in the film and that they were important. When editing the poster, we made the background white so that the bright colours coming off George would be seen and the back, dark colours from Ali would also show. This is to present to the audience the comparison of the two and to differentiate the character from how there personalities are presented through clothing. The title of ‘Love Dovey’ was made to represent George’s character and how her personality is perceived as bubbly, quirky and slightly weird. The use of the word ‘Lovey’ was put into red as it signifies romance but also, in the case of the film, could present danger. The use of purple sparkles coming from the chocolate box is a representation of how they are magical and also it gives the poster a mystical feel which is what we wanted to achieve as our inspiration was from a fairytale.

  25. The other ancillary text was the double page spread. In this i made the title in ‘Loverboy’ font to represent that it is a film about love. This is immediately shown through the use of pictures. I placed a cropped photo of George by the side of the introduction as it mentions that the interview is about her. I made sure that her clothing was the same as in the film again to represent her character, it instantly allows the audience to relate to her character and recognise her if they have watched the film already. I then placed a picture at the bottom right of the page of Ali. This picture was edited to look as if it had been take from a camera. This was a success as many people thought that it looked like George had taken, hence her stalker character. This immediately gives a message to the audience of what the film is like and what it may be about. I again, made sure that Ali was in his same clothing as he was in the film, because that how the difference between the two characters is presented. In the film its the music also but on paper, that is the only way to portray differences. On the bottom left hand corner, i placed a photo i had taken in the park of George and Ali. This photo contains both of them so it is easier to tell what is going on and how it relates to the film. The font that u used for the introduction was ‘brush script’. This gave it a fairytale look and instantly introduces the film as a mystical and magical movie. I took this writing inspiration from the story books that introduce the fairytales.

  26. How did you use media technologies, planning, research, construction and evaluation. • The way in which I updated and uploaded my work onto a page was on word press. http://sheldonschooldominique.wordpress.com/2011/03/page/2/ • YouTube was a website that enabled us to upload our videos, showing our progress http://youtube.com/ • I used Photoshop, iMovie and InDesign to construct the work and design it.

  27. What would you do differently if you could do it again? If I could do it again, I wouldn’t change any of the major areas of my film. I was very pleased for the way in which it turned out and from our audience feedback it seemed that it also went well this others. When looking back on a film, it is very difficult to see it from another person’s perspective as you seem to pick things out that no-one else can. When watching the film, I noticed a slight lapse in Ali’s voice and when we tried to change it, we couldn’t as it was an early mistake. This is something that I would double check when starting with the film before editing. There are some disjointed problems in the film when it came down to the shots. I think that in the scene with Miss Tree giving George the box of chocolates, the camera shots switched form face to face to much and it should have stayed on one face to grasp the clear signals from the facial expressions. Another minor change I would have, would be when Ali eats the chocolates, the slow motion was too long I feel and it may have been better if it were faster as that scene already carries out anyway. Overall, I wouldn't make too many changes and I am very happy and proud of the final outcome.
