  1. The Importance of Freshman Year’s Grades

  2. Lesson for the Day! • We all know that good grades are important to get throughout high school. However, 11th and 12th grade students often say that because they didn’t take school seriously during freshman year, their GPA is seriously affected when they apply to colleges. The purpose of today’s lesson is to show students just how much their overall GPA could be affected by making mistakes and slacking off during their freshman year. Your High School Career Is About To Begin. It’s Time To Make Positive Changes Now Before It’s Too Late!!

  3. Standard (Unweighted) GPA Scale: A+ = 12 C = 5 A = 11 C- = 4 A- = 10 D+ = 3 B+ = 9 D = 2 B = 8 D- = 1 B- = 7 F = 0 C+ = 6 (see pg. 26in your handbook)

  4. College Requirements Many students say that attending a quality 4-year college is a goal that they and their parents share. Here are some of the average GPAs for incoming freshmen at Indiana colleges: IU-Bloomington 9.7 – 9.9 Purdue 9.4 – 9.6 Ivy Tech 5.0 Ball State N/A Indiana State 7.9 – 8.1 Taylor 9.7 9.9 Notre Dame 10.3 – 10.5 …keep in mind, a GPA in the high-B range (9.3 – 9.6) is what most 4-year colleges are looking for…also, there is much, much more competition for collegiate openings than ever before…therefore, the better your GPA at the end of high school, the better chance you’ll have of being admitted to whatever college you wish to attend…

  5. Remember those GPAs from the last slide…if you’re not careful, here’s what could happen… • A student that gets one “C” during a semester, but “A”s in every other class has a maximum GPA of… 9.3 – 10.1 • A student that gets one “D” per semester, but “A”s in every other class has a maximum GPA of… 8.8 - 9.7 • A student that gets one “F” per semester, but “A”s in every other class has a maximum GPA of… 8.5 - 9.2 Do you see how important it is to get as many A’s & B’s as you can?... …and Freshman year is especially crucial too…

  6. 9.7 - 9.9 • If a freshman earns all D’s for their first semester, but receives all A’s for every class each semester after that, their maximum GPA is… • If a student gets all C’s their Freshman year, but receives all A’s in every class after that, their maximum GPA is… 9.4 – 9.6 • If a student gets all D’s their Freshman year, but receives all A’s in every class after that, their maximum GPA is… 8.5 – 8.7 • If a student receives half C’s and half D’s for their entire Freshman year, then receives all A’s in every class after that, their maximum GPA is… 8.8 – 9.0

  7. As you can see, a couple of missteps during Freshman year aren’t just forgotten as you move to 10th grade; they can affect your GPA throughout high school and ultimately help or hurt you getting into the college you like. ** On the plus side, colleges will also look at the difficulty of the classes you choose to take, meaning that passing harder classes will look better. Also, doing well in Honors level classes can help your college application because Honors classes carry an extra “quality point” that colleges consider. AP classes carry extra GPA points on a weighted GPA scale (see pg. 26 in your handbook).

  8. This lesson is not meant to scare or intimidate you, but rather to inform you of the competitive nature of colleges these days. It’s very important that you work hard all the way to get good grades throughout high school. One bad grade will not necessarily destroy your GPA, but a pattern of poor grades beginning your freshman year may be very regrettable when you begin to apply to colleges! Good luck throughout your Freshman year!!
