KEALAKEKUA BAY (Captain Cook Monument): Kealakekua Bay is a well-known historical site and underwater marine sanctuary. The name “Kealakekua” means “Pathway to God” and the “mana” (spiritual power or energy) can be felt here by all. The large bay is situated to ensure calm waters year-round and is one of our best Kailua Kona snorkeling tours. British explorer James Cook landed here in 1779. Today this is where the Captain Cook Monument is found commemorating the death of Captain Cook at this bay on February 14th, 1779. The waters here are clear, offering great visibility. Kealakekua Bay is home to over 100 different varieties of tropical fish, and, at times, sleeping reef sharks. As we leave the bay, we may even spot some dolphins.
