What is a “Manipulator”? • A generic term for anything that interacts with the FRC field or its game objects • Also has broad meaning outside of FIRST • Nearly always controlled by motors of some sort • Interacts with other manipulators on the robot
How Are Manipulators Designed? • Brainstorming • Designing • Prototyping • Prototypes are tested and tweaked • Final design is discussed and decided • Final design is fabricated
Brainstorming • After being given the year’s game challenge, everyone tries to think up ways to accomplish the task using mechanical parts • Designs are sketched, drawn on whiteboards, discussed with others, etc. • This is done the first few days of the build season
Designing • Done alongside brainstorming and prototyping • Taking an idea that was brainstormed and going into greater detail with it • Greater detail is needed to actualize the design during the prototyping phase
Prototyping • Creating a rough version of what the final design would theoretically be • This stage is to allow for theory to meet practice - to see how the design holds up and how it can be improved • Cheaper materials and build quality • It allows for the design to be tweaked faster and cheaper
Prototype Testing • Prototypes are tested to see how well they perform • Designs are tweaked in this phase to see if improved versions of the design work better
Final Design Decisions • The several prototype designs that were built and tested are then compared head-to-head in numerous categories • The team as a whole discusses each design’s pros and cons, and the leadership makes a final decision based on everyone’s input
Final Design Fabrication • A permanent, professionally made final design is then modeled using CAD software • Any commercial parts or machined parts are purchased and made during this step • Final robot is assembled • Any issues must be fixed during this step so it can perform during the competition • Everything is thoroughly tested during this phase
Common Characteristics • Manipulators always move in some way • Either motor controlled or pneumatic • Either interact with the game objects or interact with the field • KISS and RRRR come into play • Reminder: Reliability, Repairability, Relevance, Reasonability Ball shooter Wedge for the balances Elevator Ball pickup
