  20. Modes of Representation (REVIEW): Plato (428 ‐248 BCE) vs. Aristotle (384‐322 BCE) Aristotle: Believed works of art should be judged on how well they imitate the natural world. In other words, art should be realistic or naturalistic. Plato: Thought works of art should seek perfection. For him this was perfect symmetry and proportion. This could be called idealism.

  21. Naturalism (Realism : Based on direct observation of the natural world, and often includes landscapes, still life, and the human figure. Idealism: The treatment or manipulation of subject matter in which the artist of a specific culture is guided by constructed concepts of beauty and form.

  24. The naturalism of Ife sculpture led 20th Century Europeans to question whether it was from Africa because it went against all of their assertions of the “primitive” ideal of African art. They suggested in was made by those from the Lost City of Atlantis, or that it had to have been influenced by ancient Greece or Renaissance Europe.   25. Stylization An approach to art- making that may be based on a culture’s broad, artistic conventions or an individual’s unique, personal aesthetic. Stylization often aids in the identification of an individual artist’s work or of an artistic movement.   29. Tromp l’oeil– The use of naturalism to create an image or sculpture that causes the viewer to believe it is an actual object and not just a visual representation. This phenomenon becomes even more exaggerated in a 20th-century art movement called Photorealism.
