A full Reflexology treatment should take approximately 45 minutes or up to one hour including a full consultation with the client prior to treatment. • Before commencing the treatment a full consultation should be carried out, ensuring the client is not contra – indicated to the treatment. • The treatment room and area should be made comfortable, warm and clean and also self hygiene is of great importance. Often clients can be nervous of the treatment especially if it is their first treatment, therefore ensuring the client and relaxing them is important. • The client must be seated or lie semi reclined on the couch to receive the treatment. Making sure the client is comfortable and warm will also help them to relax. • Talking to the client and discussing the treatment, especially if it is their first treatment, allows them to understand the procedures and stages you are working through. • Often clients will close their eyes, indicating they are relaxed and do not wish to talk during the treatment. Reflexology is split up into three stages: • Warming up • Actual treatment • Cooling down • The treatment always begins with the right foot and ends with the left foot. Stages of the treatment
Before the treatment commences it is of great importance that a full consultation has been carried. The consultation is a process of questioning and assessing the client regarding their health, lifestyle, diet, medical history and any medication they may be undergoing. • Also an inspection of the feet will take place to check for any skin disorders or diseases, such as athletes foot or a verruca. If the client is contra – indicated, then possibly GP's advice is required before treating. Consultation
Once the treatment has been performed it is important that you give the client some after care advice. The after advice being: • To avoid stimulants for up to 24-48hrs after treatment • Drink plenty of water or herbal teas • Try relaxation techniques at home as a method of relaxation • Relax • Also to warn the client of the contra – actions to the treatment: Also known as the ‘Healing Crisis’ • They may feel nausea,suffer excessive urination, headaches and excessive perspiration.
